Leaves Darken

Leaves darken. They appear brown or black in color. This is called necrosis.

Necrosis can affect leaves in different ways. It can affect leaves generally, such that the leaves appear almost uniformly brown or black, or it can affect specific areas of the leaves, such that only parts of the leaves are dark, i.e., only on the edges or only on the tip. In addition, necrosis may only affect some of the leaves but not others, i.e., only the leaves in the crown.

To begin narrowing down the cause, look at the descriptions below, and select the one that best describes the symptoms you are seeing.

• Necrosis appears mostly on the edge of the leaves.
• Necrosis appears only on the tip.
• Necrosis appears mostly in the leaves of the crown. Other leaves may be affected, but the necrosis appears predominantly in the young leaves of the crown.
• Necrosis is general. The leaves are almost uniformly affected, and the necrosis appears to be affecting all of the leaves.
