Lola: Holtkamp variety (Europe). Small, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with single, red flowers and medium green, girl-type leaves. Available in the U.S. as Cleveland.

London: Optimara variety belonging to the World Traveler series. Extra large, standard African Violet (6-inch pot size). Flowers are blue stars. Leaves are medium green. Introduced 1995. More information.

Long-Tailed Mealy Bugs: Pseudococcus longispinus. A common species of Mealy Bug known to feed on African Violets. See Leaf Mealy Bugs.

Longifolia: Leaf type. Also called spider or strap. Describes a pointed African Violet leaf that is very narrow.

Loopers: Caterpillars known to feed on African Violets. The larvae of moths. Loopers are green with two white or light yellow lines on their back, and they measure about 1-1/2 inch in length. More information.

Loretta: Rhapsodie variety. Medium, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with double, bi-color flowers. Flowers are dark pink with a white edge. Leaves are dark green (red reverse). Introduced 1991. Improved 1998. (AVSA Reg. No. 7500) More information.

Los Angeles: Optimara variety. Compact African Violet (3-inch pot size) with double, blue flowers and medium green, girl-type leaves. Introduced 1988. (AVSA Reg. No. 6958) More information.

Louisiana: Optimara variety. Medium, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with frilled, semi-double, light pink flowers and medium green leaves. Introduced 1987. Improved 1988. (AVSA Reg. No. 6567 and 6959) More information.

Lower Epidermis: The under surface of a leaf. See Epidermis.

Lucy: Rhapsodie variety. Medium, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with single, lilac flowers and dark green leaves. Introduced 1990. Improved 1996. (AVSA Reg. No. 7360) More information.

Lumen Per Square Meter: See Lux.

Lux: Also called lumen per square meter or meter-candle. Unit of measure for illumination, or the amount of light that an object, such as an African Violet, is receiving. One lux equals approximately 0.093 foot candle.

Lyra: Holtkamp variety (Europe). Large, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with single, blue flowers and medium green leaves. Available in the U.S. as Carmen.
