African Violet Glossary

Leo: Optimara variety. Small, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with double, dark blue flowers and medium green, girl-type leaves. Introduced 1987. (AVSA Reg. No. 6564) More information.

Leonardo da Vinci: Optimara variety belonging to the Artist's Palette series. See Da Vinci.

Libra (1): Optimara variety. Small, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with single, two-tone burgundy flowers and medium green, girl-type leaves. Introduced 1987. (AVSA Reg. No. 6565) More information.

Libra (2): Holtkamp variety (Europe). Medium, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size). Flowers are frilled, pink stars. Leaves are medium green. Available in the U.S. as Teressa.

Licensed Propagator: A person or organization which has obtained an express, written agreement to propagate patented varieties. Such an agreement most often includes terms for providing the patent owner with some form of compensation, i.e., royalties.

Light Meter: An instrument used to measure illumination, or the amount of light that an African Violet is receiving. Light is usually measured in either foot candles or lux.

Lillian Jarrett Variegated: Leaf type. See Mosaic Variegated.

Limbo: Optimara variety belonging to the Little Dancer series. Compact African Violet (3-inch pot size) with single, blue flowers and medium green leaves. Introduced 1999. More information.

Lime: A substance sometimes applied to potting soils in order to increase the pH or alkalinity. The most common source of horticultural lime is calcium carbonate and dolomite. Lime is also used as a component of some fungicides such as Bordeaux Mix.

Linalool: One of the active compounds in citrus oils, extracts of citrus peels known to have natural insecticidal properties. Linalool acts as a nerve agent on insects. Also see d-Limonene.

Linda: Rhapsodie variety. Standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with white flowers. More information.

Liquid Fertilizer: A fertilizer which has been formulated into a liquid solution. Liquid fertilizers are often concentrated so that water must be added in order to produce the correct dilution.

Lisa: Rhapsodie variety. Medium, standard African Violet (4-inch pot size) with single, lilac flowers and medium green leaves. Introduced 1991. (AVSA Reg. No. 7499) More information.

Little Amethyst: Optimara variety belonging to the Little Jewel series. Super miniature African Violet (1-inch pot size) with double, bi-color flowers. Flowers are dark pink with a white edge. Leaves are dark green (red reverse). Introduced 1988. (AVSA Reg. No. 6937) More information.

Little Apache Girl: Optimara variety belonging to the Little Indian series. Miniature African Violet (2-inch pot size) with semi-double, pink flowers and medium green leaves (red reverse). Introduced 1991. (AVSA Reg. No. 7487) More information.
